Words of Life

I love music, and lately have been convicted when listening to a a song playing on the radio by Hawk Nelson, called ”Words”. The lyrics are very fitting with Ephesians 4:29 and the topic of self control:

Ephesians 4:29 NIV tells us “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”

Sometimes I forget how powerful the tongue can be, but both the song and verse are a great reminder. It’s so easy for me to say something negative and discouraging, especially to my husband, but that is not what Scripture has commanded us to do. All throughout the day our words have power and we have the opportunity to impact many people around us: the people we encounter at work, the gym, the grocery store, gas station, our family members, spouses and children.

At times it seems too hard and I feel there is no way I can hold my tongue on my own, but I am reminded that through the power of prayer and the Holy Spirit, it is possible. He desires for us to seek Him and ask for control over our tongue as He wants for us to only speak truth and love.

So when, like me, you get easily frustrated or impatient, seek God in asking for control and wisdom over your tongue and make every effort to only use words that reflect His truth and His kingdom and that benefit those who listen.
