The Gift of Peace

Christmas isn’t all about gifts but, in our culture, few escape gift giving. While I write lists and shop throughout the year, more talented individuals make what they give. They say it’s a way of giving themselves. I admire those who sew, paint, sculpt, photograph . . . their gifts, but I’m not among them. My hands tend to get in the way. However, among my most memorable gifts are ones that were handmade for me. While learning ceramics, my {Read More}

Is It Time to Hit the Panic Button?

Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests (Luke 2:14 NIV). It’s hard to believe how Christmas creeps up on us faster and faster as time goes by. Last year if our 16-year-old hadn’t pulled out the Christmas tree, we probably wouldn’t have had one. She began unpacking the decorations and her brother joined in. They played Christmas music as they hung the ornaments, garland and lights. It was starting {Read More}

Keeping Our Peace with Difficult People

Therefore, my brothers and sisters, you whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, dear friends! I plead with Euodia and I plead with Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord. Yes, and I ask you, my true companion, help these women since they have contended at my side in the cause of the gospel, along with Clement and the rest of my co-workers, whose names are {Read More}

3 Gifts of Peace

This time of year, we spend a lot of time thinking about gifts: what we will give our friends and loved ones, what we want to get, and what Christmas is all about – God’s gift of a Savior. Today I want you to think about another gift – the gift of peace. We talk about peace a lot during the holidays with sayings such as, “Let there be peace on earth.” But I’m talking about peace within us: freedom {Read More}

Finding Peace through Prayer

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. ~Philippians 4:6-7 (NLT) “God has given us the privilege of prayer so we won’t worry” ~I stole this beautiful quote from a friend. I can have a visionary mind at times looking frequently {Read More}

5 Peace Promise Scriptures for Christmas

At Christmas, we celebrate the birth of Jesus. Besides the name Jesus, He has many other names, including the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6). What is real peace? Perhaps you’ve heard the saying, “Know God, know peace. No God, no peace.” Peace begins with God and a relationship with Him through Jesus. To experience peace in our families and relationships, first we need to make eternal peace with God. Peace with God comes before we can experience the peace of {Read More}

Go Into Peace

Have you ever gone up to a stranger and taken hold of part of his clothing? Mark 5:25–34 recounts the story of a woman who did. She had bled continuously for twelve years. In the South, we’d say she had “female problems.” If she lived today, she probably could be cured with a hysterectomy, but her doctors couldn’t help her. Her condition meant she was weak, unable to bear children, couldn’t enter the temple area to worship, and was poor {Read More}

Between Darkness and Light

Somewhere between the darkness and the light. That is where we are as Christians. And not just at Advent time, but at all times. Somewhere between the fact of darkness and the hope of light. That is who we are. Frederick Buechner, The Clown in the Belfry The first time I flew home for Christmas, I was in college 1500 miles from the military base in New Hampshire where my parents lived. My flight was to land at 6 p.m., {Read More}

Nativity Alive: Celebrating 2 Advents

Recently my friend wrote me, “After much prayer, I finally finished decorating our home. It’s much different than it has ever been.” She continued, “We are no longer celebrating the birth of a baby, we are celebrating the soon coming of the King. The One who is faithful and true.” (See Revelation 19:11.) What an exciting reminder! As we celebrate Jesus’ first Advent, we can also anticipate His second Advent. Although my decorating isn’t much different this year, I am listening {Read More}
