The 50 Best Things About Moving

To those moving this summer: A fresh start is a good thing. It gives you a chance to begin anew with a clean slate, and that’s always good. Your apprehension brings you closer to Christ and your family learns to depend upon each other more than you’ve ever experienced before. By sharing everyone’s experiences daily, you support each other in scary situations, comfort each other in sad situations, and encourage each other to explore the countless possibilities of ministries out {Read More}

Emotional Submission: Do You Say Yes When You Mean No?

Do you say yes when you mean no? Some spouses struggle with the problem of emotional submission. This is a different issue from spiritual submission. Spiritual submission is a positive act of voluntarily yielding in love. Emotional submission is a negative act of saying yes when you really mean no. Emotional submission is often driven by fear of rejection or displeasing someone. It results in a spouse giving in to things they inwardly find offensive, painful or sinful. Freedom from {Read More}

My Mother-in-Law’s Legacy

“The will of God will never lead you where the grace of God cannot keep you.” That statement was in the flyleaf of my mother-in-law’s Bible. Many years ago I read it as I sat by her hospital bed in her den where Mom, at the age of 85, was dying. It was evident by numerous signs that the end was near. It was also the end of an era. Mom had been matriarch of the family, keeping track of {Read More}

From Here to Maternity

Do you ever hear an expression that reminds you of something your mother used to say? Do you find yourself using the same expressions—even the ones you swore you wouldn’t—with your own children? A mother’s words, whether because of wisdom or mere repetition, can become set in concrete in our minds. Mothers have an adage for every occasion. Meeting strangers: “Don’t talk to them or take anything from them.” Meals: “Eat everything on your plate. There are starving children in {Read More}

The Greatest Journey

“I did not realize there was more. The beautifully wrapped shoe box was enough. I never imagined the box was filled with things.” As a child in an Eastern European orphanage, this now articulate young woman had once received a shoe box wrapped in Christmas paper. Just the paper was enough for her. My eyes blurred with tears, making it hard to focus my camera as I tried to take pictures of her sharing her story. While my children listened, {Read More}

Choosing Gentleness

She was harsh with the other students. She snubbed her teachers. She intimidated me, and I was just a substitute secretary! Tianna was a sophomore in the small school where my husband was Director. She stood tall and proud and gazed down her nose at everyone. Looking regal, she always sported an intricate hairstyle and detailed, manicured fingernails. She wore beautiful gold jewelry with her school uniform. Although she seemed noble and composed, she was anything but gentle. Proverbs 15:1 {Read More}

Throwback Thursday Linkup: God’s Signature Dishes

  God has signed His name on my dishes. Really. At first glance you will not be able to see it, but after I tell you my story, I believe you will agree with me that God’s signature is truly there. You see, God is interested in the details of the lives of His children and the desires of their hearts (Psalm 37:4). As we obey Him, it is His delight to shower us with good gifts. When I graduated {Read More}

Grilled Corn

If your family enjoys fresh corn, why not try a new way of preparing it? Take corn still in the shucks and place it on a hot grill. Turn it every 10 to 12 minutes. Cook for 25 minutes. Take it off of the grill, shuck and cover the corn with butter. Grilled corn is a great way to have a fresh summer treat. Page Hughes is married to Dr. Les Hughes and together they have four children. She is {Read More}
