Avoiding the Car Line to Hell

There are a few sermon titles that have stuck in my mind like glue. Dr. Mark Rutland’s sermon, “The Appropriateness of Appropriateness” is one. Mark Hermann’s Avoiding the Car Line to Hell is another. Some may not think Pastor Hermann’s title appropriate in polite circles, but it most certainly is — and it’s a message every parent and grandparent needs to take the time to consider. The sermon premise is this: are we as parents / grandparents driving our children closer to {Read More}

4 Scriptures I’m Praying Over My Kids

Pour out your heart like water before the face of the Lord. Lift up your hands toward Him for the life of your young children. ~ Lamentations 2:19 As I began a new journal, I set aside a page to write Scriptures to pray specifically over my children in 2015. It is important as their mother to be intentionally focused in my prayers and continually listening for the Lord’s leading and direction. Over the years I’ve come to recognize the Lord’s still small voice {Read More}

Gluten-Free Chocolate Chip Bars

* Affiliate links included. When I began my gluten-free journey last year, I mourned the loss of cookies, cake, and bread. My wonderful son surprised me with the yummiest treat ever — gluten-free chocolate chip cookie bars. Friends who tried them could not tell the difference between regular homemade chocolate chip cookies and the gluten-free version. The only difference between the two is the type of flour used — unfortunately there are no calorie or fat differences. What’s Caleb’s secret? King {Read More}

Shaving My Grocery Budget

In the final months of 2014 I intentionally began looking at shaving my grocery budget. The budget and system in place were no longer working and needed tweaking. Re-valuating My Budget I’ve used a budget and coupons for years. The budget amount was settled upon when two of four children were in diapers. Back then I budgeted a certain amount per family member. $30 per each person (6) = $180 a week. You would think no longer purchasing diapers, wipes, {Read More}

Lunch Lady Dirty Rice

Now, as a homeschool mom, I’m the lunch lady and let me say most days I draw a complete menu blank. Our usual weekly fare includes grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato soup, maybe some pasta leftovers from dinner, and when I’m desperate–Chickfil-A. My children are good {Read More}

We Ought to Give Thanks

We Ought to Give Thanks “We ought to give thanks for all fortune: if it is good, because it is good; if bad, because it works in us patience, humility, contempt of this world and the hope of our eternal country.” C.S. Lewis “The art of being happy lies in the power of extracting happiness from common things.” Henry Ward Beecher “Whenever you get a blessing from God, give it back to Him as a love gift…. If you hoard a thing {Read More}

Thankful for Strings and Buttons

It was a cold Saturday evening in downtown Atlanta. The homeless shelter kitchen was filled with the down-and-out, men and women with only the clothes on their backs to call their own. Dreary as the weather was outside, inside it was a joyful night with a guest preacher, a youth group to serve dinner and provide singing, and plenty of good food to go around. Not to mention it was warm. As the service got underway, an offering plate was {Read More}
