Schluss Before Bedtime

In my childhood German-speaking home, Dad called our large family together each evening for Schluss before bedtime. Schluss is a German word that means conclusion or ending. Schluss was our time of family devotions. Dad read a passage from his German Bible. Then we knelt and took turns praying aloud in German, from oldest to youngest. As the youngest of eight, I often fell asleep before my turn came, so Dad changed the order from youngest to oldest, and I {Read More}

The Challenge of Disciplining Children

One of the most challenging things I faced as a mom was disciplining my children.  There were days I felt like all I ever said was no, stop, quit, and don’t.  I would come to the end of the day spent. I hope as a mom you are not where I was but, if you are, here are a few tips that may help you. Consistency is the key to obedience.  Our children are just like us, they want to {Read More}

Praying God’s Word for Your Children

One of the most important things we can do for our children is to pray for them.  We started praying for our children before they were even born and now though they are leaving home, our prayers continue to be one of the greatest gifts we can give them.  I learned years ago that praying God word has power.  It is a great way to pray for your children as well.  Here are a few of my prayer verses I {Read More}

Finding a ‘Family’ when You’re Far Away

I just returned home for two weeks working with missionaries in Africa.  There are four families and a single intern who are serving in this area.  One of the things that stood out to me during my visit is how these missionaries have bonded together as a family.  They have done several things to create a family atmosphere that could be adapted anywhere to develop family ties when family is far away. They worship together weekly.  Each Tuesday they eat {Read More}

When Mother Bear Rises Up

We’ve heard it called the “mother bear syndrome.” Many things are tolerable, but when it comes to the welfare of our children, watch out! This has been the heart of mothers since the beginning of time. The widow at Zarephath in 1 Kings 17:7 is a great example of this. The Lord told Elijah to go to Zarephath where He had prepared the heart of a widow to serve him. Upon arriving at the town gate, Elijah saw her gathering {Read More}

Family @ Full Strength in Christ

Leo Tolstoy wrote, “All happy families resemble one another; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” We rarely read stories about happy families in the newspaper, but sometimes the stories of unhappy families are so unusual they are picked up by national news services. The following is such a story:  Robert and Carol, brother and sister, got together to settle the estate of their eighty-two-year-old uncle, their mother’s brother. They had not spoken to each other since a {Read More}

The Only Unfailing Security System

Many are the woes of the wicked, but the Lord’s unfailing love surrounds the man who trusts in him. ~ Psalms 32:10 What’s the best security system for your home? I know it would not be our big Collie. Bo lays at the backdoor. Bo can open that door, if he uses the full force of his weight, but he doesn’t go out the door unless he perceives no one is watching. He’s more worried about escaping than protecting. Companies {Read More}

No Greater Joy

As I prayed at the table, my Bible before me, I opened my eyes to find my eight-year-old son copying me—head bowed and eyes closed, his Bible before him. Not having had our children very long—we adopted them mid-last year, my heart filled with joy at the sight of him taking his first steps toward Truth. It reminded me of 3 John 1:4, “I have no greater joy than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth.” Dear {Read More}

10 Ways to Greater Family Intimacy

1. Read the Bible aloud to your kids. Let them hear your voice and daddy’s voice. Missionary biographies, stories of great Christians, and stories with people of strong character. “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Matthew 19:14 2.  Slow down and talk. Draw a bath for your young child and sit on a towel on the floor and listen. Let them tell you about {Read More}
