When you were a child did you ever crawl under the Christmas tree and shake the presents? When our children were little we caught them shaking presents as they tried to guess what was in each one. Something soft and squishy meant clothes and something hard usually meant a toy. By the time Christmas day arrived the children had a pretty good idea of what to expect and looked forward to seeing what they had been looking forward to.
God gave us glimpses into His best Gift to us as well. The Old Testament is filled with 365 Scriptures that were clues to who the Messiah would be. Just as the children discerned clues from shaking the boxes, the words of the prophets gave us clues to know who the Messiah really was. Isaiah is filled with foreshadowing statements. Isaiah 9:6 tells of a child that would be born and even describes Him as Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of peace. Isaiah 53 tells us what He would look like, “He didn’t have an impressive form or majesty that we should look at Him, no appearance that we should desire Him.” Jesus was human and looked like us. Isaiah goes on in chapter 53 to tell us what was so amazing about Jesus: He took on our sin and paid the cost we owed so that we might have life eternal.
From each of the 365 prophecies we learn more and more about the Christ child who grew up to be our Savior and Redeemer. God’s chosen people knew what to look for because of the clues and yet some still missed Him. If you have never come to know the One the prophets foretold, take time this season to look for Him. Just as the children shook the packages, take time to find the clues to who He really is. You can look up Prophecies of Jesus on the internet, or your Bible may have a section in the back that tells you all of the prophecies that Jesus fulfilled. Don’t forget to open the Gift that God has for you and see with your eyes what the prophets knew only by words. Jesus is prophecy fulfilled.
