Name Above All Names

Parents-to-be are often asked, “What are you going to name your baby?” There is something delightful and special about finding the perfect name with the right fit, sound, flow, and meaning. We named our firstborn Christine Alane because, like her namesake Alane, she was born at Christmas, the name sounded beautiful and elegant, and it means bright and shining follower of Christ.

Mary and Joseph did not get to choose the name of their firstborn; His heavenly Father named Him. God revealed the name Jesus to Mary and then separately confirmed it to Joseph. Matthew 1:21 says, “you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” God was deliberate in the choice for the name of His only Son. He gave His firstborn a name with power and purpose—the name that is above every name. (Philippians 2:9). Savior. Yahweh saves.

And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.”  (Acts 4:12) Jesus is INDEED the name above all names. As we celebrate the birth of Jesus, consider how precious the choice of His name and its meaning. What does His name mean to you?
