I’m sure we’ve all read or at least heard of The Power of a Praying Wife and The Power of a Praying Husband by Stormie Omartian. Even if we don’t pray word-for-word the prayers offered in those books, we know the importance of praying for our spouses.

A few years ago I came across a powerful prayer for my husband, but it wasn’t until recently that I committed to praying it everyday. (I’m sorry I do not remember the original source. If you recognize it, let me know and the author will be credited.) It has had such an impact on my prayer life for my husband that I wanted to share it with you today.

Also, I wanted to share how I changed it a little. As I have been praying it, I kept thinking, “wow, I really need that in my life too!” I thought, why don’t I start praying this prayer over myself. Praying for yourself is not selfish, that is what makes our relationship with the Lord so personal.

There are two versions of the prayer below: one for your husband and one for yourself. Both are very similar, but the one for women is personalized for those who are homemakers and homeschool teachers. (It can certainly be adapted to any season of life.) When I pray this prayer, I feel like I’m praying more specifically to my needs instead of just saying, “Oh Lord, help us to have a good day today.”

A Prayer for my Husband at Work
Author Unknown
Lord Jesus, as my husband enters his workplace may he bring Your presence with him.
I speak Your peace, Your grace, and Your perfect order into the atmosphere of his office.
May he acknowledge Your lordship over all that will be spoken, thought, decided, and accomplished within those walls.
Lord Jesus, thank you for gifts you have deposited in my husband.
May he not take them lightly, but commit to using them responsibility and well.
Give him a fresh supply of truth and beauty on which to draw as he does his job.
Anoint his creativity, his ideas, his energy, so that even the smallest task may bring You honor.
Lord, when he is confused, guide him, when he is weary, energize him.
Lord, when he is burned out, infuse him with the light of Your Holy Spirit.
May the work that he does and the way he does it, bring hope, life, and courage to all that he comes in contact with today.
Oh Lord, even in this day’s most stressful moment, may he rest in You.
In the mighty name of Jesus our Savior I pray. Amen.

A Prayer for Myself

Lord Jesus, I pray as I greet my husband and my children this morning, they would be greeted with your love and new mercies.
I pray You would fill this 24 hours with Your presence.
Remind me to acknowledge You in all we say and do so that the children grasp how present You are in our daily lives.
Thank You for the gifts You have given me. I pray I would not take them lightly but commit to using them responsibly and well.
As I love, mother, and teach today, I pray Your truth and beauty would be my source.
Anoint my creativity, my ideas, my energy so that the smallest task I do would bring You honor.
Father, when I am confused, give me clarity.
When I am tired, give me motivation and energy.
When I am burned out, infuse me with the light of your Holy Spirit. May the work You’ve called me to bring hope, life and courage to my husband, my children and whoever else I come in contact with today.
Even in today’s most stressful moment, I want to rest in You.
In the mighty name of Jesus our Savior I pray.
Amen.
