Do You Love Me More than This?

cola

A few years ago I was preparing for a mission trip. As I prayed, God revealed He wanted me to prepare by fasting from Cokes. Now for some of you that would not be a big thing, but for me I was like really, God? I don’t drink, smoke, cuss, but I love a good cold Coke over ice. I consume at least one a day.

When I was questioning Him, I felt in my heart He was asking me, “Do you love me more than this?”

Yes, Lord, I do love you more than Coke.

That started a 40-day journey free from cold caffeine and focused on my relationship with God. Each day when I would be tempted to order a Coke to go with a snack or a meal, inside I knew the question would come, “Do you love me more?”

Saying no to the flesh was a reminder that I wasn’t just saying no to a refreshment, but I was saying “Lord, I love you more, I love you more, I love you more.”

After the 40 days God allowed me to go back to drinking Cokes, but the lesson has stuck with me for years. It is now a way of  life to ask if there is anything in my life I love or give more time or affection to more than Christ.

If you are struggling with an area God has revealed He wants you to work on, begin by answering the question, ‘Do you love me more than this?’
