Do you ever read the Old Testament and wonder what in the world they are talking about?  Why would the children of Israel not see where their bad choices were taking them?  Or maybe you are like me and know so little of the culture of the time that it is hard to understand the whole picture of their lives.

Chronicles of the Kings is a series of historical fiction books where Lynn Austin took the life of Hezekiah the king and followed his story from his father to his sons.  It helped me understand how the nation could go from worshiping idols and false gods like Molech to becoming a people totally dependent on God.

Hezekiah ran from anything that was even marginally evil and had a heart devoted to God.  Then his son drove the people back into darkness until God brought him to the end of himself as well.

Austin’s research into the times was evident, and it made the characters truly come to life besides teaching a history lesson of Israel’s past.  Through her life stories of characters large and small, my heart was drawn not just into the story, but even deeper in love with God.  I too repented of putting other things before Him and longed for sweet fellowship with Him.  For the first time I could see the Temple not just as a really big place in a faraway land, but as a much smaller place where worship took place.  I will never read the Bible the same way again.
