Easter and the Girl Next Door

[Editor’s Note: Mentoring Moments first ran this piece by Cole Huffman several years ago. His daughter is 13 now and still plays with the girl next door. The staff of Mentoring Moments wishes each of you a Happy Easter!] The house behind us long sat empty as a FSBO. I called the owner a few weeks ago before trimming back some overgrown shrubs on his side of the four-foot tall picket fence that runs the length of our mutual property {Read More}

What Does John Mean by Love?

“In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith” 1 John 5:3-4 The Apostle John is often described by scholars as the “Apostle of Love” because he continually emphasized the love of God toward all humanity. He even reminds us that the world will know we are His disciples by our love. But {Read More}

Longing for Those You Love To Be Free

“She sees them walking in a straight line, that’s not really her style. And they all got the same heartbeat, but hers is falling behind.” —Echosmith, “Cool Kids” My youngest daughter is 12 now. Show of hands here: Who wants to relive your twelfth year of life? I don’t. Not a cool time for most. Even the word “twelfth” is awkward with that “f” in it, like some lacy nobleman added it to his generational suffix for flair: Fauntleroy, Twelfth {Read More}

Difficult to Fabulous Fridays

*Affiliate links included for your inconvenience. Fridays are difficult days for me for several reasons. I won’t go into detail, but suffice it to say Friday has become a day I don’t look forward to except for the fact that the weekend follows it. God knows how I struggle on this day so it was no surprise that He gave me a special message over and over this morning in my quiet time. BE KIND! Being kind is mentioned over {Read More}

Hating Church

Four years ago if you were to ask me how I felt about the church I would’ve probably told you that I hate it. I am a pastor’s kid. Growing up, I felt like there were always about a zillion people in my house. There were constantly people who wanted my parents’ attention. I literally had to wait in line to talk to my dad after he preached on Sundays. My dad could never go to my dance competitions on {Read More}

Finding Hope in a Hopeless World

Today after reading and watching the news and perusing Facebook I’m discouraged, downhearted, and dismayed. There is so much anger, pain, and just pure evil in the hearts and lives of people. I’m feeling pretty hopeless about this old world. It seems as though there’s nothing I can do to make a difference. As I was typing those words my eyes fell on a paperweight I have in front of my monitor. Wow! Talk about an immediate answer from God! {Read More}

You are Loved and Protected

After living in Arizona for a few months, Mark commented that he had never seen so many birds that would rather walk than fly. Whether it is a roadrunner or a family of quail, we constantly dodge them as we drive around our neighborhood. We have affectionately named all roadrunners, “Jake.” It’s easier. They are busy birds, always seem to be in a hurry and, much to my surprise, are meat-eaters. We have a resident quail couple that visit a {Read More}

Spring is in the Air

I do not like winter. I like warm. I’d live at the beach if God would send me there. Don’t get me wrong; I live in Kentucky and I’m a Kentucky girl. However, I would leave it from after Christmas until April if I could. Don’t like cold, don’t like snow, and don’t like ice! But I do like spring. I like warm sunshine, birds chirping, thunderstorms (with nothing threatening like tornadoes or flooding), and butterflies flitting about. I’ve had {Read More}

Courageous Faith

There is now about 15 inches of snow in my yard. Second time in as many weeks we’ve had an overabundance of snow. This has caused my dog Cinnamon some trepidation. She wants to get to the backyard, but the step off the deck is buried in snow. She knows it’s there but cannot see it. She can see the yard but not how to get there. This is about her tenth trip out this morning. Nothing has changed. She {Read More}

Despite God’s History of Faithfulness

I had a moment today. It was one of those that comes out of no where, but you know you can’t stop it. I had picked up my daughter from preschool and for whatever reason, the cares of this world just came up and choked me. I began to cry.  I couldn’t help it. Typically I take a head in the sand approach to matters such as this.  I justify my approach spiritually using Matthew 6:25-34. My husband and I {Read More}
