“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father.” [Matthew 10:29]

For hearts that struggle with the reality of suffering [which is every man sooner or later] the Lord has an answer. ”…even the very hairs of your head are all numbered…so don’t be afraid…” [v.30] Nothing happens–not even the falling of a sparrow to the ground–is without His knowledge. If we cannot accept the sovereignty of God in difficult times then He is not God.

It is not the fact of suffering that causes our struggle but the understanding that God is totally aware of all that is happening. Do we yet believe in the midst of our struggle? “Unbelief is the most active thing on earth; it is a fretful, worrying, questioning, annoying, self-centred spirit. To believe is to stop all this and let God work.” [Oswald Chambers] Our word this morning is followed by God’s response to our belief in His awareness. ”Whoever acknowledges Me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven” [v.32]

Acknowledgment makes way for our protection in the midst of the suffering, not our avoidance of it. Having worked through all the suffering Job said, ”My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you” [Job 42:5] and all that Job had lost was multiplied back to him!
