Mentoring Moment’s Theme for the New Year

Jesus Is

Happy New Year! Each year Mentoring Moments enters the new year with a theme for our upcoming posts. Last year our theme was Grace-Full Living. We shared articles on grace-full homes, grace-full seasons of life, grace-full mentoring, and grace-full outreach. Highlighting God’s grace in the everyday practicality of life was both enjoyable and challenging. Most years we are praying and pondering right into late fall concerning our theme for the new year. Not so for 2012. Infact, by April 2011 {Read More}

All That and a Bag of Chips

Picture a stadium scene. You are running a race. From the packed stands you hear the cries of many people. Some shout, “That’s a pipe dream, get real.” Others, “Prepare yourself for the worst.” Not to be outdone, another group whispers, “She’s not our type. Did you hear about her past? Look what she is wearing!” Some do not even bother to stand as you run past, their silence and averted eyes say it all. Joyce Landorf Heatherly describes a {Read More}

Servant Leadership

“Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave — just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Matt 20:26-28). A rider on horseback, many years ago, came upon a squad of soldiers who were trying to move a heavy piece of timber. A corporal stood by, giving lordly orders {Read More}

Cajun Cookoff!

Love Cajun cookin’? Last year the Lord used a Cajun Cookoff in our congregation’s fund-raising efforts for missions. It’s a fun way to bring together delicious dishes and an opportunity to get together with church and community family and friends. I lived in Louisiana for a few years and love Cajun food–for me helping plan a Cajun Cookoff was a lot of fun.  In our church there are also several great cooks and lovers of Cajun food.  In the past {Read More}

Passing it On

Grace-full mentoring comes in a multitude of forms… from helping a young mother in her attempts at caring for her new baby to guiding a pre-teen as she learns how to accessorize her wardrobe. From encouraging a neighbor with simple and inexpensive ways to prepare meals when her husband’s salary has been cut to sharing ideas with a bride-to-be whose mother died years before. We often think mentoring means someone teaching deep theological messages, but mentoring comes in a variety of {Read More}

What Pimples Prove

girl5

My youngest daughter was standing in the kitchen ready to practice her violin.  Her oldest sister said, “What’s on your cheek?” “Nothing.  Just a red spot,” replied the youngest. Two other kids crowded around her instantly, pressing their faces close to hers to inspect this “red spot.” “Hey, you’ve got a pimple!” her sister announced. “No,” countered her brother, “it’s a real live ZIT!” So she ran off to the bathroom to check it out.  Could it be true?  Could {Read More}

Should I Buy a Mentor?

For only $9.95 a month you can have your own Christian mentor. She’ll email you once a month and for additional fees talk by phone. There’s a free e-book Bible study with secrets of Biblical mentoring along with subscriber-only access to her website. Susie Mentor is available right now! Ridiculous, isn’t it? But in reality, I’ve seen sites charge over $600, so $9.95 would be cheap! Being a mentor is not about money. We are called in Titus 2 to teach and train, not charge {Read More}

Words from the Wise: Edith Schaeffer

Words from Wise

[NOTE: Often when we hear “mentoring,” we only think of the one-on-one kind. However, it struck me recently that I had been mentored by many women who never knew my name. I heard them speak or read their books and through their words, they mentored me. This series which will be posted occasionally includes some of the lessons we can learn when we receive Words from the Wise.] The late theologian Dr. Francis Schaeffer used to say that there is {Read More}

When His Footprints Are Not Seen

The television news crew was broadcasting breaking “live at ten” news on a dark street with red lights flashing in the background. A compact car had been demolished. Broadsided by a drunk driver who ran a red light while traveling at high speed, all three passengers in the small car were dead. The names of those killed had not yet been released, the reporter said. I prayed for the unknown families that were being notified of their loss. How quickly {Read More}
