The Gift of Peace

Christmas isn’t all about gifts but, in our culture, few escape gift giving. While I write lists and shop throughout the year, more talented individuals make what they give. They say it’s a way of giving themselves. I admire those who sew, paint, sculpt, photograph . . . their gifts, but I’m not among them. My hands tend to get in the way. However, among my most memorable gifts are ones that were handmade for me. While learning ceramics, my {Read More}

Go Into Peace

Have you ever gone up to a stranger and taken hold of part of his clothing? Mark 5:25–34 recounts the story of a woman who did. She had bled continuously for twelve years. In the South, we’d say she had “female problems.” If she lived today, she probably could be cured with a hysterectomy, but her doctors couldn’t help her. Her condition meant she was weak, unable to bear children, couldn’t enter the temple area to worship, and was poor {Read More}

Worried Sick

While traveling through the Appalachian Mountains, a couple stopped at a rustic country store. While the man sampled the hoop cheese and dill pickles, his wife talked with an elderly woman in a faded sunbonnet. In a few minutes the wife came over to her husband and whispered, “Do you know that they don’t get newspapers up here? And that little woman doesn’t even own a TV or radio. She doesn’t know anything that is going on in the world.” {Read More}

Don’t Allow Squawkers to Steal Your Peace

“Do not be quickly provoked in your spirit…” [Eccl. 7:9]. Squawking–even the word can irritate with its sharp and unrelenting sense of a warring spirit. There you are enjoying the peace and beauty of God when suddenly a flock of blue jays with their constant squawking startle every living thing within hearing distance! Then there are those other squawkers–the people squawkers. It’s an attention-getter, self promoter, a blatant screech of “look at me.” It definitely can jar the nervous system. {Read More}

We Will Go Through…with Peace

Do you ever feel as if God is preparing you or a loved one for bad news? You know… that gut feeling, that restlessness, that longing to pray and intercede for yourself, your family, your friends, your church, pastors, or missionaries? God has a way of preparing us, dear ones. It’s happened to me many times: That urge to pray for someone I haven’t thought of in years, friends’ marriages, protection for children. Listen to Matthew 20:17-19: Jesus was going {Read More}

The Myth About Peace

In our secular, yet super-spiritualized society, we hear words bantered about that seem to fit our Christian worldview. Sometimes we even adopt what the world offers because we haven’t really understood what it is that God offers. One of those things is peace. In the last few months I’ve noticed people walking away from their commitments, or decisions, or even things they once said God called them to, simply because they “didn’t have peace about it.” But what kind of {Read More}

And Next Comes Peace ~

Love, joy, patience, and now during April, we began our study of the Holy Spirit’s fruit of peace in the life of believers. Lets be honest here, our human flesh is given to worry, anxiety, and disharmony with others. All of us have experienced the absence of peace as a result of our original sin nature. We’ve all made mental decisions to ‘do better’, ‘keep our mouth shut,’ ‘be peaceful’, not worry’ and had it last only as long as {Read More}

Dealing Peacefully with Holiday Stress: Meet Debbie

The holidays are quickly approaching. I feel my chest tightening and my stomach clenching. It’s hard to get my breath and I suddenly feel very tired. It’s anxiety. I’m anticipating the stress that comes with the preparations for social gatherings, long car rides to visit family, too many events to attend, and the extra financial burden of showing love in a tangible way. So I was thinking . . . if I feel this way and I’m not in charge {Read More}

A Clear and Present Danger

[This is the third in a series of four Friday posts on fear.] “You must be the bravest person I’ve seen,” the Ben Yehuda Plaza shopkeeper said as he totaled up my purchases in shekels. “After the bomb exploded last week, all the tourists fled Jerusalem.”  The bombing is obviously still heavy on his mind, I thought, remembering that the boarded-up site of the terrorist attack was less than a block away. My friend and I had noticed the absence {Read More}

From Accused to Peaceful

I was SO mad. The woman on the other end of the phone was telling me off, accusing me of things I hadn’t done…not letting me get a word in edgewise. Then she hung up on me! I was furious! I stomped around, cried a little, then opened my email to send a message. But I was too late…she beat me to the punch and her subject line read: Yes, I hung up on you! Lovely. I’d been trying to {Read More}
