I will extol the Lord at all times; his praise will always be on my lips. I will glory in the Lord; let the afflicted hear and rejoice. Glorify the Lord with me; let us exalt his name together.

-Psalm 34:1-3

“Mommy, do you remember you put the cell phone on the roof of our car just before strapping me in my car seat?” is not the question you wish to hear from your preschooler in the backseat (particularly as your speedometer just reaches 60 miles an hour). It can be discouraging.

What’s our best weapon against discouragement? Especially the discouragement that can strike any marriage. When money runs low, tempers run high, and good news seems in short supply, it’s easy to slide down into the long, dark tunnel of despondency.

So what’s our best weapon in marriage against the quicksand of hopelessness?

The answer is to give God our praise. When things go terribly wrong, we should start praising Jesus immediately and not stop until we feel the burden of our spirits lifted. Praise is a powerful weapon that slays the dragons of defeat and despair. It changes our focus from earth to heaven, and soon even the worst circumstances lose their hold on our lives.

There’s an old saying, “Praise God and pass the ammunition.” Well, praising God is the ammunition for defeating all that would come against us.

Lord Jesus, give us the faith to turn our despairing emotions into expressions of praise, believing You are always up to something good in our lives. Amen.
