What Oreos & Cheetos Have to Do with Faithfulness

“Do you want to go to a fabric store and learn how to paint on fabric?” That was one of the many outings Belle Barron a 65 year old retired nurse asked me her 23 year old pastor’s wife to adventure with her. We had lots of fun painting, crafting, cooking, and studying God’s word together. Mrs. Belle is a few days from 90 now but through the years she has been the picture of faithfulness to me. When we were in seminary she would show up at church with a bag or two of groceries. We did not have excess money so name brand cookies and chips were out of the question. When the bags would come with Oreos and Cheetos in them our sons would jump for joy.

When Mrs. Belle turned 80 I asked what she was doing these days. She laughingly said, “Taking care of the old people.” What she was saying was that she was still teaching Sunday School, going to the nursing home and teaching a bible lesson weekly, as well as visiting the sick and hurting. She regularly checked on home bound citizens in the community that needed her to pick up a few things at the grocery or pharmacy.

It has been 25 years since we were her pastor and wife. She prays for us and her pastor’s and family daily. Every now and then I get a call from her asking how she can pray specifically for our children who are now in ministry.

She doesn’t just study God’s word. She asks daily, “Lord who is it you want me to minister to today.” What a wonderful saint for God to send to my path early in my life so I could see what living the God filled life really looks like.

If you are young, in the middle of your life or even at retirement age you can take a lesson from Mrs. Belle. Stay close to the Lord and remember every day is a gift from God to do what He has for you. Your life has purpose and meaning. Just look around and find where you can make a difference.
