Stocking Traditions

While researching various family traditions regarding Christmas stockings, I learned some interesting facts. For those families who have a stocking tradition, they hang the stockings on the fireplaces. Most families fill the stockings on Christmas Eve to be opened on Christmas Day. Some families open stockings first thing in the morning while others wait until after presents are opened. Some families like to save the opening of their stockings until after Christmas dinner.

A new tradition I came across seems to have been birthed from the fact that not all homes have fireplaces. These families take what is called a Christmas sack (described as a pillowcase of brightly colored material) and tie it to the foot of beds. When children awake there are one to two presents along with candy and fruit. The children can open their Christmas sack at any time during the night or early morning. The point is to keep the children occupied until the parents awake.
