I love Christmas! If it sparkles or twinkles, I think we need two.
You can imagine my inner struggle as my daughter, who has been serving on mission in a third world country, came home frustrated with the excess we live with in America. Through tears she explained the simplicity of living in a hut with no running water or indoor plumbing and walking everywhere.
I knew this Christmas would need to be different.
Through seeking the Lord I feel like God is showing me that I just need to make it simple this year. So here are some of the things I will be doing or not doing to make it a little simpler.
* Only display things that reflect Jesus. Nativity scenes, verses of Scripture
* Decorate a tree with family ornaments
* Use candles and Christmas lights to keep the focus on the Light of the World
* Keep gifts minimal yet still meaningful
As I have scaled back my expectations, I have also found there is less stress involved because I am not putting the work in that I have in years past. I do miss some of the special things I usually display, but I am sure over time I will figure out the balance. For this year I am going to enjoy my daughter and know that what I am doing is really what is best for her. As I was thinking about this Christmas I am sure it will be more like Mary than Martha, sitting down, enjoying my company, and a whole lot less worried about things that are not necessary.
