“Share the Gospel daily. If necessary, use words.”
Before my husband and I began our journey to serve as international missionaries, I clung to this phrase. I would justify to myself that I had indeed been obedient to the great commission because I had lived my life in such a way that others could see Christ in me.
One day in a church staff meeting I heard the above quote. As I went home, the words rang in my ears and an uneasiness began to build in my heart. At this point, my husband and I were packing up our home to move to the mission field. We were praying and dreaming about what our new ministry would look like. As we began to talk through what was in my heart, I realized that simply living a Christ-exalting life was not sharing the Gospel to the fullest extent.
We were going to minister to a people group who spend their entire lives seeking God’s approval. They fast and pray, are hospitable, care for the poor and the widow. They are a generally loving and kind people.
We asked ourselves, If we simply live so others can see Christ, what makes us any different from the lost yet “good” world around us?
The answer… our words.
Only the truth about our Savior Jesus Christ can bring fulfillment and peace to the lost and dying world. Yes, we need to daily live a life that reflects Chris,t but we must also be intentional to take the initiative to share the story of whom we are reflecting.
Successful witnessing is taking the initiative to share Christ, in the power of the Holy Spirit and leaving the results to God.
I encourage you to spend time praying today for your lost friends, family, and coworkers who have yet to hear the Good News. Pray for opportunities to “use words,” and be prepared to share because God will surely open doors.
