How to Actively Wait on God

Actively waiting.

Those two words do not seem to go together.  Either you are active or you wait, but how do you do them both at the same time?

Over the last few weeks and months God has had my family in a waiting pattern.  Our life was turned upside down when my husband’s job situation changed.  Everything that has been our familiar patterns of life have been changed.  As we have prayed and sought the Lord the only answer has been to wait on the Lord and His timing.

I don’t mind telling you it has been so difficult.  As we have waited I also know we need to go on with life and keep our minds engaged.

How do I actively engage with God yet wait patiently on Him? Here are some things God is teaching me in this season.

Stay in His word daily for encouragement and wisdom.
It is amazing how God’s word can communicate to you when you are seeking to hear from Him.  He can and does use stories from the Bible to give you strength and hope to remember God is faithful even if you can’t always see where He is leading.

Spend time in prayer personally but also with a small group of trustworthy friends.
When having a difficult day it is good to have someone to pray with you and encourage you in the Lord. It is also helpful to have accountability partners for when hard truth needs to be spoken. I have noticed that at times I begin thinking in a negative way about myself and others.  I have needed someone to say, that is not true or healthy and to lead me back to truth.

Do what you know to do.
If there is a specific thing God has told you to do, do it.  Don’t wait.  A story is told about a child who was told to go to the barn in the dark of night.  The child was afraid and the wise father said, go to what you can see.  As the child went step by step eventually he made it to the barn.  God is saying to us take the next step to what you can see.  As we proceed step by step eventually we will get to the place God has for us.

Character matters.
In the midst of your darkness remember there are people watching to see The Light.  When things are uncertain it is easy to grumble and complain or even speak negatively about your situation or others.  Remember that a lack of faith and grumbling and complaining caused the Children of Israel to spend 40 years in the wilderness.

Praise Him in the dark.
Even though you can’t see the picture clearly of all God is doing choose to praise anyway.God inhabits the praise of His people.  it is also a great reminder of who God is and what He can do!

We are still in the middle of waiting, but I am gaining strength daily as I realize this is only a season.  This trial will not last forever but I want to be found faithful every step of the way.
