Gentleness: Strength under Control

Have you ever spent time with a horse? Most of them weigh over 1200 pounds. Not only do they outweigh humans, but they also out power us. However, with the right training and leadership you can ride and lead them.

When I think about gentleness, I think about my horse.  At first she was skittish and anxious but, over time as our relationship formed, she settled down and learned to trust me. Now this gentle giant allows me to lead her, ride her, and teach her new behaviors. Though she is much more powerful than me, she trusts me to help and guide her.

Gentleness in our lives can look much the same way. As we develop a relationship with God and learn to trust Him more, He will guide us and lead us daily. There is no need to be skittish or anxious. We have a wonderful leader we can trust. He is faithful and true and deals tenderly with our hearts. Our hearts can rest even when others around us are fearful. We can also show that same tenderness, peace, and strength under control to those around us. Gentleness is choosing to harness our fears, frustrations, behavior, and attitudes knowing God has it all in hand and we can trust Him. Then our outward response to the world around us is one of calm control.
