When a Nation is Born

Today my family will celebrate July 4th with hamburgers, hotdogs, and homemade ice cream. If the rain holds off, we will watch a spectacular fireworks show set to patriotic music at a nearby venue. There will be sparklers in the driveway when we return followed by an encore fireworks display by various neighbors in our subdivision.

In 1776, there were no celebrations similar to ours in 2013. Being 237 years removed from that fateful July 4th, we sometimes forget the decision made to form a new nation was not a jubilant occasion, but one of prayerful solemnness. Today we celebrate because men of character, integrity, and strength stood strong and made hard choices.

John Adams is a movie which depicts our nation’s story. One of my favorite scenes is when the roll is called and votes are cast to dissolve ties with Great Britain. The moment is portrayed brilliantly as one can see the seriousness of men who knew the magnitude of what their vote meant.

As believers it is easy for us to see the hand of God at work in the formation of the United States of America. Today we live in a nation of liberty and freedom celebrating the brave courage of our founding fathers. As we celebrate today, let’s stop and pray for our great nation, leaders, and citizens. Just as those in 1776 needed God, we need Him today to bless the United States of America.
