The Christmas Story

Some families enjoy reading the whole Christmas story on Christmas Day or in parts throughout Advent. Others appreciate acting it out in a family play. Here is the Christmas story from the four Gospels, in chronological order, minus the genealogies, divided into five days and followed by a few discussion questions. You can enter these Scriptures in order on Biblegateway.org and print off the entire story. Then print off these questions for a time of devotions with your family.

1. Mark 1:1 and John 1:1-18
Who is the Word?
When did the Word exist?
Who is the Light?
Remember John? What do we know about his relationship to Jesus?
If we receive Jesus, what do we have the right to become?
Jesus is the Word who became flesh. How did He dwell among us?

2. Luke 1:1-80
What does the angel say is going to happen to Zechariah and Elizabeth?
Why was Zechariah silenced?
How would you feel if an angel came to you with a message?
How does it make you feel to know that NOTHING is impossible with God?
Mary breaks into a song of praise full of Scriptures. How did she know them?
What does Zechariah have to say when he can talk again?

3. Matt. 1:18-24
Jesus (Jeshua) means “the Lord is salvation.” What does Immanuel mean?
What kind of man is Joseph?

Luke 2:1-20
How would it feel for Mary to have a baby but not a place to stay?
Which Old Testament book prophesied that the baby would be born in Bethlehem?
How many angels first appear?
What appeared around the shepherds?
How many angels appear later?
Why did God let a lowly group of shepherds be the first to hear the good news?
What was their response to seeing the baby Jesus?

4. Matt. 1:25 and Luke 2:21-38
How did Simeon know this was the Messiah?
How did Anna know this was the Messiah?
What was her response to seeing the baby Jesus?
How are we like Simeon and Anna? What are we waiting for?

5. Matt. 2:1-23
Why are King Herod and “all Jerusalem” disturbed about the birth of the King of the Jews?
Did the Magi come to Herod or did Herod call for the Magi?
How did the Magi respond to seeing Jesus?
Why didn’t they go back to Herod?
How did God protect His Son Jesus?

Luke 2:39-40
What does the Bible tell us about Jesus’ childhood?
How can we grow strong and be filled with wisdom?
