Joy When Your World Falls Apart

I saw this picture yesterday with a family all jumping into the air holding the letters that spelled joy. It was taken for their Christmas card. What struck me so was that this family has lived through one of the most difficult years of their life. The mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had surgery followed by chemo and all of the demands that come with postoperative care. Toward the end of her chemo treatments, her husband lost his job. They have two daughters in college and the demands financially alone are overwhelming. Yet in the midst of all of the challenges they face, they wanted to communicate to their friends they have joy.

What allows a family to have joy even when their world is falling apart around them? The answer is that they have a relationship with God through Jesus His Son that allows them to cast every care on Him and know that He cares for them. He is their provider, their help, their strength. It is in the midst of adversity that we see what we are truly made of. This family has lived peace, hope and even joy. When asked what has helped them through they say, God and His Word. They are claiming daily the truths found in the Bible and standing upon the promises they have found there.

If you are floundering right now and facing some pretty major obstacles in your life, I challenge you to be like the Smitherman family and trust Jesus. Spend time in His word and focus on who He is. Claim the promises He has given you in His Word. If you are not sure where to start, search verses of hope on a site such as biblegateway.com. Join us in reading the Bible through or just find a Christian friend who has been through a difficult time and ask how they held tight to God has they walked their difficult journey. Share your prayer need with the Mentoring Moments staff. We would be honored to pray for you.
