How much money do you think is spent each year in building the body? There are fitness centers in most towns and athletic training facilities in most schools. Even many churches have work out facilities. But how much do we put into working out our faith?
Athletic trainers tell us that building our bodies is a matter of daily replication of toning exercises. You start with smaller weights then gradually build to heavier weights once you can do many reps at the lower weights. The same is true with our faith. We trust God daily with our everyday schedules, challenges, and needs and in time our faith is built to handle the heavier trials that come along.
I know it is silly, but there was a time I would gather my shopping list and coupons and pray that God would help me to find meat on sale and just the right items so I would have enough money to cover all our needs. I was working out my faith as I grocery shopped.
I have laid my hand on the top of a wayward child’s head and quietly prayed for the grace to love this child through most unlovable times. Those were some heavier faith weights.
Last year when my husband suffered a heart attack my friend commented on my cool-headed faith. I can tell you that it came from years of lifting the smaller faith weights to be ready for the big ones.
I wish I could tell you I always have great faith. That is not true. My gymnasium of faith is usually in the area of finances and there are still times that the enemy takes me to the mat in this area. But little by little and day by day God has built my faith over the years.
Where do you begin? Right where you are by asking the Lord to help you through this day. Give God every need or concern that comes your way. Look for God’s work around you. When you find meat on sale, give Him praise. When you have a calm spirit in the midst of chaos, give Him praise. When you find yourself in a trial and He provides the strength to go through, give Him praise. As we look for where He is at work in our lives and give Him praise, we are not only acknowledging He is providing, but we are setting ourselves up to look for His intervention in our lives. These are the faith building moments.
Body-building efforts will eventually pass away, but faith-building efforts are eternal. Begin today to work out your faith, and see God move in a mighty way in your life.
