“Now I lay me down to sleep…” Do you remember the rote prayer we learned as children? Or maybe you taught your children, “God is great, God is good. Let us thank Him for our food.”
There is nothing wrong with teaching a child those simple prayers, but as our children get older we want to teach them how to talk to God about their everyday problems and give Him thanksgiving for the things He is doing in their lives. Holly Hawkins Shivers has written I Can Learn to Pray, a family devotion book dedicated to teaching children how to pray.
Each of the 52 devotions begins with a simple lesson about prayer. Then it challenges the readers to put what they have learned into practice through talking to God. The devotions are divided into learning to pray, saying thank you prayers, praying wow prayers and praising God. It deals with saying I am sorry prayers and prayers where the child makes requests of God. The final lessons are on listening and how Jesus prayed.
If you take one lesson per week it is a year full of strategies on how to pray with practice that will lead your children, but also your entire family, in being more effective communicators with God.
