In His Presence #14: No Substitute for God’s Word

If you haven’t written any New Year’s resolutions, I have two suggestions that are a must.  I told my children there are two things I hope they learn from me above all else: to read the Bible and pray daily.  Our preacher made a great point on Sunday.  He said the Israelites could not eat stale manna.   We, too, cannot rely upon past Bible knowledge.  The Bible is alive. We need to read it every day because it’s one of the tools God uses to speak to us.

For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Hebrews 4:12, NASB

I’ve heard the Biblical version of the Christmas story probably every single year I’ve been alive and yet reading it again this year, God spoke to me in a fresh way.  For example, the word “haste” stood out to me.  The shepherds hurried to tell others about Jesus, and I was convicted of how often I don’t even snail crawl to spread the good news.

I love devotions and read one every morning, but there’s no substitute for God’s Word.  I want to encourage you to begin this year making your In His Presence time a priority.  Our Friday Link Ups are a great place for us to encourage one another, so be sure to post your comments.
