[NOTE: Often when we hear “mentoring,” we only think of the one-on-one kind. However, it struck me recently that I had been mentored by many women who never knew my name. I heard them speak or read their books and through their words, they mentored me. This series which will be posted occasionally includes some of the lessons we can learn when we receive Words from the Wise.]

Though born a woman, womanly things I have left behind:
Yarn, the shuttle, threads of the loom, and baskets.
It is the flowery meadow of the Muses I admire,
And the cheerful choral dances of double-crested Parnassus.
Perhaps other women are pleased with other things,
But these are my glory, and these are my joy.

These lines from a poem by Olympia Morata (1526 – 1555) are, under various translations, her best known work and have been quoted by some as an early feminist proclamation. I have included them in my historical semi-fiction, Weight of a Flame, because they represent one phase of her life, but I don’t consider them a feminist statement, for various reasons.

First of all, we can’t impose on the past categories that did not exist or had different connotations than they have today. Secondly, Olympia did not write these words in protest against inequality between the sexes. She was at that time a teenage girl trying to please her father and teachers, who encouraged her to cultivate her outstanding academic talents, exchanging, as one of them wrote, “the pen for the distaff, books for house linens, and writing exercises for needle-work.”

Probably Olympia didn’t mind leaving these women’s pastimes behind. She may have been proud of her unique abilities, but when her world was suddenly turned upside down, she lamented that she had neglected what was really important – the knowledge of God. As God allowed her to continue to use her talents, she saw them in a different light: “When I considered the matter over and over again as diligently as possible, I could find no other reason for me to work at these studies other than ‘it lay at the feet of God.’”

As we consider the many different situations Olympia encountered in her life, we can say that, when the occasion called, she ran her household well. When her health forced her to hire outside help, she took care to find a dependable person. When her younger brother was entrusted in her care, she acquired a book on godly child-rearing.

Her literary accomplishments remained outstanding and received great recognition, but she learned to keep them in the right perspective, holding God’s glory and the benefit of His church foremost in her mind. Her last poem expresses well what her focus had become.

I long to be fade away, so great is my confidence in Christ,
and to be with Him in whom my life thrives.

When was the last time you stopped and looked around on a busy city street? Have you noticed that the majority of people are looking down at a device in their hand? This rapid acceleration and dissemination of mobile media technology is fundamentally altering how people think and relate to one another. And that’s just one example.<ins cite="mailto:Jason%20Matyas" datetime="2012-01-27T12:39"></ins>

Important issues related to media use and discernment are discussed in the new film Captivated: Finding Freedom in a Media Captive Culture, which will premiere nationwide through National Movie Night the weekend of February 3-5. The documentary is produced by Media Talk 101, a ministry that has been teaching Christians about how to exercise discernment with media since 2005. Produced by Media Talk 101 President Phillip Telfer and directed by Colin Gunn who also recently released the groundbreaking IndoctriNation documentary, Captivated was recently selected as a semi-finalist in the documentary category at the San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival (SAICFF) to be held February 23-25.

Captivated is a wide-ranging look at the comprehensive set of issues involved with our modern media culture. It asks some of the following important questions:

Everywhere we go we are surrounded by screens. Have we entered a techno utopia or a virtual prison?

Should we be celebrating unreservedly or should we be cautious and skeptical?

Is it the greatest leap in productivity or the biggest setback from the things most meaningful in life?

Has today’s connectivity drawn us closer to one another or strangely more disjointed?

Is our social experience richer and deeper or more shallow and artificial?

Discover insightful answers to these questions from media experts, church leaders, and inspiring individuals and families from across the country, including:

I hit the snooze button up to three times. My husband asks, “Why not set it right the first time?”

We put on our sneakers for our morning walk. We ask, “How’d you sleep?” and tell tales of our dreams.

We walk several blocks. We walk, we talk.

Heading back home, we reflect on the day and stop to pray.

Jesus is our Alpha—the beginning to our day.

I get ready for work. At the sink, I pray.

As I do my hair, I read God’s word.

Jesus is my Alpha.

My husband sits, coffee in hand, Bible in lap—bowing his head.

I walk by and smile. Thank you, God.

Jesus is his Alpha.

I go to work. My husband—he works from home.

Throughout our day, Jesus is our Alpha.

As our day nears its end, we lock all the doors and climb into bed.

I open my Bible. He opens his.

We each read a chapter.

Our Jesus, Omega—our end He is.

We lay face to face and discuss what we’ve read.

We pray for the day, say, “I love you.” We kiss.

Alpha, Omega—Jesus is.

Although this year ends, another begins.

My prayer, my heart: Jesus, please stay

Our Alpha, Omega.

Amen and Amen.

I think about love every day….how much I love my family, how I love the life I’ve been given, and how much I love the Lord.

Love is important to me and with Valentine’s Day just around the corner, I get excited about another chance to express my affection to those around me. It may sound silly and childlike, but I enjoy showing genuine love to others. I think of it as a special delivery directly from God through me. I also feel like loving others helps to define me as a person who loves God and obeys his commands.

John 13:34-35 New International Version (NIV) 34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

This year we’d like to help you feel the love and share some too. We’re offering two packages of sweet treats (no calories to guilt over!) to two winners. We want you to feel pampered and cherished and we want you to have the joy of sharing with a friend as well!

One winner will receive:

Fellow Readers —

Would you join me this February through April on a journey with Jesus? Perhaps you’re looking for a Bible study but your days are filled with work, and your evenings are filled with responsibilities and family time. We can do this daily study together independently on our own time, and ask questions and share with one another online when we can.

The book: Years ago, after I wrote Preparing My Heart for Advent to help readers prepare for the Advent Season, I considered writing an Easter study but didn’t want to be redundant. However, I discovered there wasn’t a study about the women of the Easter story. And so I began reading the Gospels specifically looking for how Jesus radically transformed the lives of the women he met. Preparing My Heart for Easter: A Woman’s Journey to the Cross and Beyond is the result.

The women: I learned “the women” is repeated over and over in the Gospels: The women traveled with Him, supported Him, followed Him to the cross, remained at the cross, saw the tomb, prepared spices, returned to the tomb, first heard and told the Good News, first saw the resurrected Jesus, and helped form the early church.

Jesus so loved the women and transformed their lives. Have you met any of them? Jairus’ daughter and wife, Mary Magdalene, Peter’s mother-in-law, the woman at the well, the widow at Nain, and Salome, to name a few we will meet. We may find our own story parallels some of these and take comfort in these encounters. And yet, we are loved and uniquely created to have a personal relationship with Him, too!

And so, as the women of 2012, let’s meet Jesus anew and take a journey to the cross and then—with our newfound exploration of the Easter story—beyond.

Our study will begin Monday, February 20. In the meantime, you can purchase the book on Amazon.com or order it from your Christian bookstore. You may see two different covers, either book will work! And if you want to get a headstart, go for it!

For those of you who don’t know me, I’m a mother, musician, playwright, teacher, and live on a sheep farm and infuse the study with stories of lambing, parenting, music, drama, and countless Easter Passion Plays.

I look forward to hearing more about you and how Jesus works in your lives this Lenten season!

”But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard but doing it—he will be blessed in what he does.” [James 1:25]

Do you ever feel guilty when someone is telling you what they learned in their quiet time—and hope they don’t ask you what you learned in yours? Do you long for a greater intimacy with the Father? Or perhaps you have experienced the joy but at the moment wonder where the joy has gone. First, don’t feel guilty but keep on returning to the habit of being intentional about seeking Him morning by morning.

In this one verse James wraps up what it takes to experience the joy and freedom of being a follow of Christ. Let’s look at one word more—INTENTLY.

Intently means to firmly fix or concentrate—or having the mind fastened upon some purpose. Finding freedom is one of the promises attached to James’ recommendation but it’s not ‘hit and miss’; it’s something that requires a habit formed by ‘continuous’ application. We tend to think that freedom and joy come with salvation. Deliverance comes with salvation, but to activate the gift of freedom and joy that deliverance provides, we have to unwrap the gift—look into the gift—and be a partaker of the gift.

Check out what God is saying in His Word every morning—write down what you see—write down what you hear—write down the questions you have and leave a space for the Holy Spirit to give the answers. His voice will quietly give you answers, and freedom will overflow your heart with joy as you intentionally… just do it!

Garth Brooks sang about “Friends in Low Places” but friends in positions to help us are what we’d really like. According to the spokesperson for jewelry store, Shane and Company, if you choose them for your fine jewels “you’ve got a friend in the diamond business”. If you are lucky enough to be the child of a police officer (like me) then you might get out of a ticket or two or your daddy might get to know a bit more about what you’ve been up to than you cared for him to know.

In today’s world it is evident that who you know matters. In God’s kingdom it’s all about who you know too, and guess what? As a Christian you know the King’s son, and you don’t just know him from afar, you get to be on a first name, he’ll drop anything for you basis. In John’s gospel chapter 15 and verse 15, Jesus tells his disciples that he no longer calls them servants but friends. These words are meant for us too and it is important to note, this friendship with him is not a superficial one. The word translated “friend” in this verse is “philos” and according to Strong’s concordance means a friend; someone dearly loved (prized) in a personal, intimate way; a trusted confidant, held dear in a close bond of personal affection.

Think about what that means. Held dear. Prized. Beloved. He knows you inside and out and loves you anyway. You are precious to Him. I am precious to Him. We’ve got a friend in heaven, a BFF, seated beside the Father’s throne telling the King of Kings just how much he loves us.

One thing to keep in mind, a true friendship requires that you BE a friend too, and one of the best ways to do that is to stay in touch. The prayer line is always open and amazingly you can call on Jesus anytime day or night with no long distance charges or worry about going over your cell plan’s minutes.

God created each of us. All of us. We are not various races of people, we are one…the human race, created by a loving God.

Over the ages, a tiny little lie took root and grew. A lie that says all human life is not equal, not precious, not a right bestowed by a loving Creator.

It is not a political issue; it is a human rights issue.

It is a God issue.

This is Sanctity of Human Life month and Sunday, January 22nd, is Sanctity of Human Life Day. For Mentoring Moments it is more than a month or even a special day, it is a call. As women of God, we are called to teach and train. This year we will be providing ongoing education into humans rights, specifically in the areas of abortion, slavery and human trafficking, adoption, special needs children and adults, widows and orphans.

If you are a blogger or even use Facebook and Twitter, we encourage you to join us and become a voice too. Share the facts, the information, the call to help, and be a voice (even if you feel like you are only a small voice crying in the vast internet wilderness).
It is easy to give Sunday School answers to questions such as, “What is the priority of your life?”

As Christ followers we are quick to say Jesus is our priority because it is the right answer. Yet when it comes to the reality of your life, what really is the priority?

Look at your calendar and checkbook–you will see where your priorities reside. Whatever you invest your time and money in, that is really your priority.

Jesus said, “Where your treasure is there your heart will be also.” He also said, “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added to you.” In both verses Jesus is reminding us that we invest our time money and energy in what really matters.

In these early days of 2012, begin by being honest with yourself. Once you evaluate where your time and money is going, ask God how He would have you invest your time and money. Then set up a plan to make His priorities yours.
